The Ruling: Judge Johnson granted the NCAA’s motion for summary judgment in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia, finding no evidence that the NCAA qualifies as a recipient of federal funds (rejecting plaintiffs' arguments regarding Department of Defense concussion research funding).
The Lawsuit: Filed in March 2024 by Gaines and more than a dozen other female college athletes (backed by the Independent Council on Women's Sports), the suit challenged past NCAA policies that allowed transgender women—such as Lia Thomas—to compete in women's sports events.
